Scotland’s deposit return scheme will reduce the £46 million of public money spent removing litter and fly tipping from the Scottish environment each year.
Scotland’s Deposit Return scheme will remove up to one third of litter from our streets, parks and waterways. This will significantly benefit our day-to-day lives. It will also save money – directly, on clean-up costs, and indirectly.
It will also also aims to help reduce the wider negative impacts of litter, such as effects on house prices, community wellbeing, local businesses and crime. Taken together, these impacts, which cause at least cost our society and economy a further £361 million each year.
